Summary
The protagonist, a new office worker, finds himself suddenly sucked into a popular modern fantasy popup event that he had eagerly anticipated. But this isn’t just any event — it turns out he’s been transmigrated into a world where he’s working at a prestigious large corporation!
The perks of the job are incredible: great welfare, a high salary, kind and competent bosses, and everything looks like a dream come true. The protagonist uses his knowledge of this world’s lore to rapidly climb the corporate ladder. But while he’s achieving success, he’s far from happy.
Instead, he finds himself wishing to escape. Even though his new job comes with many perks, the eerie, unsettling atmosphere of the world he’s trapped in makes him long for the mundane comfort of home.
And yes, the kicker: it’s a ghost story — and he still has to work.
Novel Features
1. Main Character
The protagonist is both relatable and engaging. He’s someone who can’t handle scary things, yet he is decisive and capable when it matters. His ability to solve problems quickly and utilize knowledge about the world makes him a fascinating character, though the sense of fear and discomfort he constantly experiences adds a unique tension to the story.
(While the story is a horror/mystery, as the information about the world is slowly revealed, it’s hard not to feel that the suspense will be less impactful as it progresses — but I’ll keep quiet about that for now!)
2. Supporting Characters
The supporting characters are very well-rounded. They possess unique personalities that stand out, blending normal, relatable traits with the occasional touch of madness that is characteristic of this particular world. Additionally, each faction or group in the story has its own values, making for a rich and layered cast of characters that add depth to the narrative.
3. Episode Development
The pacing is relatively fast. The protagonist, equipped with prior knowledge, is usually able to solve most of the problems he encounters quickly. Most events unfold neatly and swiftly, thanks to his unique position. The story occasionally explores the “butterfly effect” of the protagonist’s actions, but the resolutions are mostly rapid and efficient.
4. Genre Features
The horror and mystery elements are executed brilliantly. The atmosphere is chilling, and the protagonist’s knowledge of the world (and his unique abilities) help him navigate and resolve these eerie events. The story maintains a consistent tension while throwing in unpredictable twists, especially in how the protagonist’s goals are pursued. Each episode keeps you guessing, as it’s hard to predict how the protagonist will handle the next problem.
5. Readability
There are a few quirks in the writing style, especially with sudden changes in font size, color, or the repetition of sentences. These might be slightly jarring for some readers, but overall, it’s a minor issue. Apart from these, the story is easy to follow, and readers can enjoy it without too much trouble.
Final Thoughts
This story stands out as an enjoyable read in a genre I really love. The author’s previous work, Deadly Deadlock (데못죽), was also highly enjoyable, but this one feels even more captivating. The unpredictability of the plot and the protagonist’s journey to achieve his goals are highly intriguing. It’s a mystery-driven story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
One of the biggest regrets is how quickly I finished it! I just couldn’t stop reading, and now I wish there was more.
