Review of Sword of the Undying

Yo, if you’re craving a fresh necromancer manhwa with that “legendary villain reborn in the hero’s family” twist, Sword of the Undying (aka The Necromancer of a Renowned Sword Family or 검술명가의 네크로맨서) is literally brand new (only like 5-6 chapters out right now) but already getting some early buzz on Reddit’s r/manhwa. The novel it’s based on wrapped up at around 200 chapters, so I dug into Korean reviews on tistory.com and blog.naver.com too for the full picture.

MC Archimond was the continent’s most feared necromancer until the sword hero Berkel Reinland chopped him down. Two hundred years later he wakes up as a newborn baby in the hero’s own sword clan. First words out his mouth? Straight-up summoning undead like it’s nothing. The early manhwa chapters are fun as hell—watching a literal infant casually dropping dark magic while the family loses their minds is peak comedy and power fantasy. Art looks clean and atmospheric so far, with solid undead designs and that classic “hidden OP in a prestigious family” vibe. Reddit folks who caught the first batch are calling the premise super fresh and the tone a nice mix of dark humor and revenge setup.

But the novel reviews are pretty mixed, which is important since the manhwa’s just starting. On tistory some readers gave it a solid 8.4–9.2/10, praising the world-building, constant twists, and how it redoes the necromancer trope without going full edgelord. Others on blog.naver and different tistory posts straight-up dropped it after 100+ chapters, saying the MC feels kinda wishy-washy (half ruthless, half oddly soft), the plot gets generic mid-way, and it turns into standard “I secretly OP but family drama” filler. A few called it plain average (평작) at best—fun for killing time but nothing groundbreaking.

Overall it’s got potential to be a solid pick if you like necromancer + sword clan politics. Early manhwa looks promising, but keep expectations in check based on the novel’s ups and downs. I’d give it a cautious 7.2/10 for now—strong hook, decent execution so far, but the full story has some bumps. Worth a read if you’re bored of the usual hunter slop.
