Title: 천재 궁수의 스트리밍

■ Setting and Plot ■

During his school days, Yoo Sang-hyun was a prodigious talent in Olympic archery, a rising star expected to reach great heights. However, an accident involving an AI taxi damaged the nerves in one of his most important hands. This forced him to give up archery entirely, leaving him to rely on connections to land a corporate job.

Despite his lackluster educational background, Sang-hyun faced constant harassment from his manager at the company. Eventually, he was laid off as part of a company-wide restructuring.

With nothing to lose, Sang-hyun thought, Why not try earning money through virtual reality gaming like everyone else these days?
Even though his nerve issues prevented him from shooting arrows properly in real life, perhaps things could be different in the virtual world.

Thus, Sang-hyun adopted the alias “Almond” and began streaming as a gamer specializing in archery.

  • “You picked a bow? Are you doing a bow challenge?”
  • “Wow, this game is brutal for bows. Arrows bounce off armor, friendly fire’s a thing, and you have to keep track of arrow count—it’s a nightmare.”
  • “Didn’t you read the stream title? This guy’s a total newbie. Lol.”

“Is using a bow hard?”
“Yes, absolutely.”
“Okay, then I’ll use a bow.”

  • “Aw, look at this feisty newbie. So cute.”
  • “Gotta get smacked around by the hard stuff to wake up. Lol.”

As Sang-hyun chose the bow, the viewers began mocking him.

But then…

Headshot.

  • “Wait, did he just shoot that without even aiming?”
  • “That’s just beginner’s luck. Lol.”

Twenty consecutive one-shot kills.

  • “…What?”
  • “Is this a bug? Why does he keep landing headshots?”
  • “Hacks. This guy’s totally using hacks.”

Boss defeated in one shot.

  • “WTF? Did he just kill the boss?”
  • “Wait, are we not supposed to kill the boss?”
  • “It’s not that. It’s just… that’s not how this is supposed to work. Lol.”

Thus begins the crazy archery streaming journey of Yoo Sang-hyun, the prodigy with unmatched talent.

■ Personal Rating ■
★★★★☆ (7.5/10)

  • “The plot follows the typical template of mass-produced game novels, but it’s fun.”
  • “Combines archery talent, battle royale (PUBG), and League of Legends into a game novel.”

■ Personal Review ■

As I often note in my reviews, game novels these days give each protagonist a unique backstory or talent, but the overarching plot remains the same.

Usually, the main character has exceptional skills in real life—be it fitness, cooking, appetite, crafts, or martial arts—but a tragic accident robs them of their abilities (e.g., paralysis, loss of taste, life-threatening overeating, hand injuries, leg injuries). This forces them to turn to virtual games to find satisfaction, leading to a story where they outshine everyone else using their unique talents.

This novel follows that exact formula:
A prodigy archer suffers a nerve injury due to an AI taxi accident, forcing him to retire. After losing his job, he starts playing a virtual reality game, rediscovering his passion for archery and using his unique skills to surpass others.

What sets this story apart (barely):
Though it still incorporates many popular trends, the novel does a decent job of blending them:

  • Traditional game novel structure centered on archery.
  • Popular PC game elements like League of Legends and PUBG.
  • Streaming culture and humorous viewer commentary.

Because it combines so many trending elements, the story is engaging enough to hold your attention.

For example:
In the PUBG-style segments, the game is portrayed as if it’s a fully immersive virtual reality. While most players use guns, Sang-hyun sticks to a crossbow, a weapon others deem impractical. Yet, he consistently wins “chicken dinners” with it.

In the League of Legends-inspired segments, players increase their affinity with champions to form contracts and fight alongside them. Naturally, Sang-hyun’s main champions specialize in archery.

Supporting Characters:
One notable aspect of the story is the well-done portrayal of supporting characters, such as:

  • Sang-hyun’s former colleague, who quits their job to become his manager. Together, they grow from small-time streamers to major YouTubers.

Where It Falters:
Despite its enjoyable elements, the novel starts to drag around the middle. After countless repetitive League of Legends sequences, the protagonist enters the backstory of a champion to raise their affinity, which led me to drop the novel.

Though the author does a great job blending familiar ingredients, the story eventually feels like eating the same dish over and over again. It’s enjoyable at first, but it quickly becomes tiresome.
