Title: 천마를 삼켰다
■ Setting and Plot ■
Hero
A person capable of manifesting the essence of a legendary figure in the form of a weapon or blessing.
The stronger the legend of the heroic spirit in their lifetime, the clearer and more powerful the manifestation.
Only a select few “Aptitude Holders” are blessed with the ability to contract with heroic spirits and qualify as heroes.
Typically, this awakening manifests between the ages of 15 and 17.
Those who miss this window lose their aptitude 99.99% of the time and end up as ordinary civilians—just like the protagonist.
At 17, the protagonist surpasses the awakening period and loses his potential to become a hero.
Even his once-promising aptitude scores, which hinted at unprecedented talent, disappear entirely.
“Let’s end it here.”
After graduating high school, the protagonist enlists as a civilian sergeant in a special frontline unit,
hoping that his dormant aptitude might somehow return. However, it doesn’t, and he eventually retires.
He continues his career at a civilian company producing military supplies, where he conducts field investigations.
One day, while investigating minerals in a D-grade dungeon, the protagonist discovers an unusually shaped summoning circle.
As he idly traces the faint lines with his palm, black threads emerge from the circle and shoot into his mouth.
[“You’ve got some skills there. They said you were among the Eastern Three Oddities, and bringing you here was worth it… wait, what is this place? Why is it so dark and empty? And what’s with this constant growling sound?”]
[“The threads of the Big Dipper intertwine, binding two fates together!”]
[“You’ve obtained One Body, One Mind! Memories are shared.”]
“What is this?”
[“What’s going on?”]
From that moment, the memories of the two entities begin to synchronize.
“The Heavenly Demon of the Demonic Cult?”
[“A dungeon, monster investigation squad, Min Jae-ho?”]
Thus begins the unexpected coexistence of two souls.

■ Personal Review ■
Recently, I read a traditional Heavenly Demon story that I found captivating, The Heavenly Demon Overturned the World.
The final chapter revealed that the Heavenly Demon ends up connected to a modern man, Min Jae-ho.
According to the author’s afterword, The Heavenly Demon Overturned the World ends on an open note,
connecting it to their previous work, I Swallowed the Heavenly Demon.
[Although I Swallowed the Heavenly Demon finished serialization first, in terms of timeline, it serves as a prequel to The Heavenly Demon Overturned the World.]
[At the end of I Swallowed the Heavenly Demon, Dokgo Cheon, having fully ascended to the rank of Heavenly Demon, is engulfed by a beam of light and ends up in Min Jae-ho’s body.]
Hearing this, I immediately started binge-reading I Swallowed the Heavenly Demon on KakaoPage…
but it turned out to be a standard modern hunter-fantasy featuring a Heavenly Demon.
The story starts with Dokgo Cheon, the Heavenly Demon of the martial arts world,
who accidentally enters the body of Min Jae-ho after stepping on a summoning circle.
To escape this predicament, Dokgo Cheon begrudgingly teaches Min Jae-ho martial arts,
only to discover that Min Jae-ho is a natural genius with instinctive talent.
Over time, Dokgo Cheon becomes invested in Min Jae-ho’s growth.
While the premise is somewhat interesting, the story ultimately feels like a typical modern fantasy:
- The Heavenly Demon resides within the protagonist’s body in spirit form (a trope seen in many similar works).
- The protagonist retakes the hero’s test → attends an academy → participates in a guild battle.
- A villainous organization, “The White,” terrorizes the world, which the protagonist must confront.
The story flows predictably, following the common patterns of modern fantasy. I ended up dropping it midway.
Even the depiction of Dokgo Cheon as the Heavenly Demon didn’t align with my expectations.
If the character had remained consistent with the Dokgo Cheon from The Heavenly Demon Overturned the World,
I might have been more engaged.
Comparison of Dokgo Cheon Across Works:
| Heavenly Demon in The Heavenly Demon Overturned the World | Heavenly Demon in I Swallowed the Heavenly Demon |
|---|---|
| Serious and reserved; dislikes being praised, often deflecting attention. Shows humanitarian traits and helps others unless they are enemies. | Arrogant and self-centered; prone to narcissism and authority-worship. At one point, he suggests sacrificing an old man to save the protagonist. |
| Chronicles his rise from an infant rescued from bandits to achieving the ultimate realm of martial arts. | Suddenly enters Min Jae-ho’s modern body and starts guiding his growth. |
Ultimately, the story’s premise and development felt too familiar, and the Dokgo Cheon I had hoped for turned out to be entirely different. I ended up dropping the novel halfway through.
