Review of Solo Farming in The Tower Novel

Title: 나혼자 탑에서 농사

[Brief Summary]

One day, 100 black towers, each standing 990 meters tall, suddenly appeared on Earth.

People known as “Climbers” began to emerge, having been randomly drawn into the towers and then returning. The items brought out by these Climbers are sold at extraordinarily high prices, and the only ways to enter a tower are through a randomly appearing “Vanishing” portal or by purchasing entry tickets brought back by Climbers.

The protagonist, Park Sejun, decides to tighten his belt even further to afford the increasingly expensive entry tickets. His plan? Growing his own crops at home to save on food costs.

While buying ingredients like green onions, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes to start his farming journey, a Vanishing suddenly appears in front of him. Without hesitation, Sejun dives into it.

When he wakes up, however, he finds himself not on the pristine, white marble first floor of the tower—replete with bright lights, shops, and training centers, as rumored—but in a dark, cave-like area. Realizing he’s stranded, Sejun starts planting crops like green onions and tomatoes to survive while waiting for rescue.

But what awaits him isn’t a rescue—it’s an array of monsters(?) such as rabbits, cats, baby bears, bats, and even dragons.

Thus begins a calm yet heartwarming tale of Sejun’s survival and farming adventures within the tower.

[Analysis and Highlights]

  1. Charming Characters
One of the most enjoyable aspects of this novel is its array of captivating characters.
As the story progresses, an incredibly diverse cast is introduced. Starting with a rabbit that knows how to farm, you encounter a cat who runs a business, a gluttonous baby bear, a tsundere dragon, a hardworking cow, and a hamster who’s a magician. These characters are all distinct and full of personality.
The chemistry between these various characters and the protagonist maximizes the novel’s tranquil, healing atmosphere, creating a driving force that keeps readers engaged.
  2. A Relaxing Atmosphere with a Dash of Hunter-Style Tension
The story strikes a balance between a soothing daily life and moments of light tension reminiscent of hunter genres. Most conflicts are resolved easily by the protagonist and his animal companions, giving the story a vlogging-like charm as it showcases simple daily life. At the same time, mysteries such as the reason for the towers’ existence and the unresolved challenges Sejun must face maintain a sense of suspense and anticipation.
  3. Freshness in Concept
The combination of farming and healing as central themes provides a refreshing change from the typical thrill-driven works. While the story lacks the catharsis often associated with action-packed narratives, its tranquil tone makes it feel unique and encourages readers to keep coming back.

[Drawbacks]

  1. Frequent Typos
One major downside is the frequent typos. While I personally didn’t mind too much, they might be distracting for readers who are more sensitive to such issues.
  2. Repetitive Plot Progression
Another downside is that the process of conflict and resolution tends to be quite repetitive. Additionally, the calm atmosphere, while appealing, may feel monotonous to some readers over time.

[Overall Impression]

In an era where many stories focus on overpowered protagonists and fast-paced, thrill-seeking narratives, this novel stands out with its fresh, tranquil vibe. Although it’s a power fantasy with a swift-moving plot, the serene tone adds a unique charm.

That said, the repetitive nature of its conflicts and chapters may lead to readers feeling bored quickly. For those who can enjoy the lighthearted and childlike appeal of the adorable characters, I highly recommend this novel. With the recent webtoon adaptation, you might enjoy comparing both mediums!
