Title: 천마는 평범하게 살 수 없다

■ Background & Synopsis ■

Baek Joong-hyuk, the leader of the Heavenly Demon Cult, ruled over the martial arts world and enjoyed a long, fulfilling life before his death. Facing ascension into immortality, he rejected it, choosing instead to die as a human.

However, upon regaining consciousness, he found himself in a completely different world, inhabiting the body of another person.

The new body belonged to Roman Dmitry, the eldest son of the Dmitry family, a noble house that had risen to power through a lucrative iron mining business and unparalleled blacksmithing skills.

Roman, however, was nothing more than a worthless scoundrel, indulging in hedonistic pleasures while abusing his position. He was infamous for violence, even mistreating knights and peasants in his territory. Fearing the mandatory two-year military service for nobles, he chose to end his life with poison.

It was at this moment that Baek Joong-hyuk’s soul entered Roman’s body.

Reborn as the eldest son of a blacksmithing noble family, Baek Joong-hyuk begins his unstoppable journey to conquer the new world.

■ Personal Rating ■

★★★★☆ (9/10)

  • “The most entertaining Heavenly Demon novel I’ve read so far.”

■ Personal Review ■

Among the many works featuring the Heavenly Demon theme, I found this one to be the most engaging since “Nano Machine.”

  • “Nano Machine” was captivating due to its unique premise of introducing futuristic nanotechnology into a martial arts world.
  • In contrast, “The Heavenly Demon Can’t Live a Normal Life” may lack such innovative flair, as it simply reincarnates the Heavenly Demon into a noble’s body in another world. However, the story compensates with:
    • Memorable characters,
    • An engaging plot, and
    • Rich world-building.

If I had to choose, I’d vote for “The Heavenly Demon Can’t Live a Normal Life” as the more enjoyable overall.

Highlights:

  1. Unique Premise:
    • The protagonist, possessing martial arts far beyond the understanding of the new world, sees the inefficiencies in how knights use aura (internal energy) and resolves to dominate the continent with his superior martial knowledge.
    • His rapid growth and overwhelming power quickly draw the attention of aura-ranked knights and political leaders.
  2. Escalating Scale:
    • The story evolves from personal duels to territorial conflicts and eventually to wars between nations.
    • The pacing is perfect, with each event carefully building excitement, leaving no room for boredom.
  3. Plot Twists:
    • The revelation about the first Emperor of Chronos in Part 1 is an incredible twist, setting the stage for the story’s later developments.
    • Several mysteries and foreshadowing, especially about certain characters’ identities, add intrigue and heighten expectations for the climax.

Notable Characters:

  • Marquis Valentino (The Mad Collector):
    • An eccentric noble with an unrivaled obsession for collecting swords.
    • His fixation on Roman’s blacksmithing talents often results in hilariously over-the-top behavior.
    • Even Roman, who rarely shows emotion, can’t help but chuckle at Valentino’s sheer absurdity.

“When will you make a new sword?” Valentino would frequently ask, driven mad by the thought of what masterpiece Roman might create next.

  • Henry Albert (The Opportunistic Freeloader):
    • Originally a useless noble prone to blaming others, Henry’s life changes when he accidentally ends up alongside Roman during a pivotal battle.
    • By sheer luck, he survives, while others perish, and gets mistaken as Roman’s trusted ally.
    • Leveraging this misunderstanding, he becomes a celebrated historian and writes bestselling accounts of Roman’s exploits, including “I Was There That Day” and “How Legends Are Born.”
  • Viscount Conrad (The Comedic Relief):
    • A minor noble who frequently finds himself panicking to impress Roman.
    • In one memorable scene, he frantically steals an expensive ruby ring from his wife’s drawer to use as a last-minute birthday gift, shouting apologies as he runs out.

Setting Details:

  • Chronos Empire:
    • The first aura technique, created by a reincarnated peasant from Murim, involves crude internal energy circulation that explodes outward when needed.
  • Valhalla Kingdom:
    • Once a small southern kingdom, it rose to imperial status after defeating the Hector Kingdom. However, this was only due to an agreement with Chronos to remain as an equal partner in a secret alliance.
  • Aura Measurement System:
    • 1 Star: Red (Basic aura manifestation)
    • 2 Stars: Orange (Able to cut steel with aura-infused weapons)
    • 3 Stars: Yellow (Recognized as elite within kingdoms)
    • 4 Stars: Green (Highly regarded continent-wide)
    • 5 Stars: Blue (Renowned as top-tier on the continent)
    • 6 Stars: Purple (The pinnacle of aura users)

Final Thoughts:

This novel was a delightful read, blending comedy, action, and intrigue seamlessly. The steady progression and well-executed character arcs kept me hooked until the end. Highly recommended for fans of martial arts and fantasy crossovers!
