Main Character:
The protagonist is one of Asia’s greatest footballers, having won multiple titles such as the EPL Golden Boot (twice), La Liga Pichichi (once), Champions League Golden Shoe, three Ballon d’Or podium finishes, FIFA World Best (four times), AFC Asian Cup Golden Boot and MVP, and a World Cup Silver Ball. Despite his impressive accolades, he never once reached the top spot, finishing as runner-up in the league six times, as well as in the Champions League three times, and finishing second in the Ballon d’Or three times. At the age of 36, after losing in a penalty shootout in the Champions League final, he dies from a heart attack and finds himself transported 17 years into the past. The story then follows his relentless pursuit of victory.
Personal Review:
Overpowered Protagonist (Munchkin)
The protagonist is described as a football genius on par with Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, and Di Stefano. He has extraordinary talent, but due to injuries in his past, he was unable to fully utilize his physical abilities. After returning to the past, Roan regains a healthy body and uses his past experiences to grow even stronger. As an overpowered character, there is no one who can stop him. However, while he is presented as a “munchkin,” the experience of his growth is not very satisfying.
Football Accuracy
Although it is a football novel, there is a lack of proper football knowledge in the story. For instance, the protagonist calls a shot that misses the goal a “valid shot,” and the basic formation explanations are missing. The protagonist often scores goals by dribbling past defenders with personal skills and then shooting, which feels unrealistic. The author, despite having written other completed football novels, shows a lack of understanding of the sport, which lowers expectations for the story.
Evaluation:
Originality: ★★★★☆
The plot of a protagonist, who never won a title in his previous life, returning to the past to try and win is fresh and original.
Engagement: ★★☆☆☆
Due to the lack of football accuracy and the lack of satisfaction from the protagonist’s overpowered abilities, the novel doesn’t fully capture readers’ attention.
Popularity: ★★★★☆
As football novels maintain a steady demand, there is potential for attracting readers, especially those who enjoy sports fiction.
Writing Skill: ★☆☆☆☆
The writing feels immature and lacks emotional depth, with cringy lines such as “Oppa, I’m dying~~~” and characters that are difficult to distinguish. There’s also a lack of understanding of football, which makes it hard to get invested in the story.
Consistency: ★★★★★
The author has been consistent with the updates, with 167 chapters published since the first release on October 23, 2024.
Overall Assessment:
This novel shows the author’s lack of understanding of football, with basic mistakes like failing to explain formations or the unrealistic nature of the protagonist’s goal-scoring. There are frequent mentions of the ball hitting the goalpost, which creates more moments of missed goals than actual goals. This detracts from the potential “coolness” of an overpowered protagonist. There is a specific cringe-worthy line (“Oppa, I’m dying~~~”) that feels out of place, and it would be better if this were removed. The novel could have been more enjoyable if it included comedic elements, as it lacks the depth and excitement needed for a serious football story. It’s a missed opportunity with an intriguing premise but ultimately lacks the execution to deliver a compelling story.
Average Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.0 stars)
